After a 15-year hiatus, direct flights between Derry and Dublin are on track to return by October 2026, marking a significant boost for connectivity in the northwest.

The Department of Transport has initiated steps to re-establish the Public Service Obligation (PSO) air route, which was discontinued in 2011. Minister of State Charlie McConalogue confirmed that officials are collaborating with the Shared Island Unit to finalise a funding model for the service. The goal is to have a contract in place for the route by October 2026.

Minister McConalogue emphasised the importance of City of Derry Airport as a vital infrastructure asset for the northwest. He announced plans for Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien to meet with senior airport officials in June to discuss the PSO further.

The reinstatement of the Derry-Dublin air link is anticipated to enhance regional development, offering improved access for both business and tourism sectors.
