Work to clear and close-off one of Dublin's biggest illegal dumps has finally begun.
Residents living right beside the landfill near Darndale have campaigned for years for the site to be shut down.
The bill to remove thousand of tonnes of waste, and permanently close what is one of Dublin's biggest and longest running illegal dumps, is expected to cost up to 6 million euro.
The piles of rubbish, that includes fridges, cars and even asbestos, are several stories high and sit right beside homes at Moatview court and Belcamp Gardens.
Residents had complained of fires regularly breaking out and being overrun with rats, while the city council said back in 2020 urgent action was needed.
The Irish Times reports work to remove the mounds of waste is now underway and is expected to take up to 4 months.
