A south Dublin GAA coach, who was caught with €600,000 worth of cannabis, told Gardai he was trying to provide for his family after losing his job.

Earlier, David Gill from The Pines, Leopardstown Road, was jailed for seven years for his part in what was described as a major drug operation.

In August of last year, Gardai swooped on several locations across Dublin as part of an operation to break up a major drug dealing network.

38-year-old David Gill was caught delivering the drugs in his van during a surveillance operation in Stillorgan.

More drugs were found in a container he used and €30k in cash was found hidden in a pool table during a follow-up search of his home.

The father of four admitted everything and told Gardai he was acting as a mule for a high ranking criminal in order to make ends meet after losing his job.

Today, his lawyers described him as a man who was trying to provide for his family and someone who was "hugely" involved in several GAA clubs in the area as well as the Glenmore Dundrum soccer club.

Judge Martin Nolan noted his otherwise clean record but said he couldn't ignore the fact that he was involved in distributing drugs on an industrial scale - something he felt warranted a severe custodial sentence.

He then jailed him for seven years.
