Medical experts said Dragos Nica from Mourne Park was psychotic when he stabbed Michael Gannon in November 2013.
Judge Tony Hunt said this case was a tragic example of how a moment of normality could turn to devastation.
55 year old Michael Gannon was looking after his daughters children when one of them saw a man peering in the window.
Mr Gannon opened the door and was stabbed once in the chest by Dragos Nica who admitted the attack but denied murder by reason of insanity.
Two psychiatrists told the Jury that Dragos Nica suffers from has schizophrenia and was psychotic when he stabbed Mr Gannon.
Mr Nica had delusions that the victim’s daughter who he had a brief relationship with had poisoned him.
He hallucinated that he was dying from this poison and he had pleaded with Eminem and 50 cent to avenge his death.
Dragos Nica has been in the care of the Central Mental Hospital since the stabbing.
