A Santry man is due to be sentenced for stealing €30,000 from a security company he used to work for.

Damien Carrig, a 35-year-old father of four from Oakpark Drive, claims he was forced to do it by a criminal gang.

Damien Carrig used to work as a van driver for cash-in-transit company GSLS. Last Christmas Eve, he picked up €30,000 from a Dunnes Stores branch. A few days later, someone noticed the lodgement hadn’t been registered.

Gardai looked over CCTV footage and Mr. Carrig became a suspect. He was arrested on Jan 28th and admitted taking the bag of cash from the box as soon as he got back to his van. He said he hid it under his jacket and walked into the Arlington Hotel on Bachelor’s Walk with it.

He said he only did it after coming under severe pressure from a criminal gang. He wouldn’t go into any more detail, but admitted he’d been paid €2,500 to take it.

The cash has never been recovered, but Dunnes Stores was refunded by the security company.

The 35-year-old is in court this afternoon where he’s due to be sentenced.
