Dublin Town is welcoming the boost in trade in Dublin city centre before Christmas.

The business group says the city has been "well able to cope" with the increased footfall.

It's thanking the public for the support shown to businesses, with traffic and footfall at their highest levels since the pandemic first broke out here.

New Dublin City Council figures published by The Irish Times show traffic volumes hit 86% of pre-COVID levels by mid-December.

Dublin Town Chief Executive Richard Guiney says footfall has been much better before Christmas in the city than expected.

He said: "We have 13 cameras around the city that monitor footfall levels... they've been hovering around three-quarters of the 2019 level, which is well in excess what we had anticipated.

"We'd expected around two-thirds of the 2019 levels."
