Plans to demolish the building known as "Dublin's ugliest" have been revealed.

Hawkins House, which is home to the Department of Health, would be replaced with a new €50M development.

It's understood staff would move to the old Bank of Ireland headquarters on Baggot Street, while another government department would move into the new building if it gets approval.

Hawkins House was built in 1962 and The Office of Public Works has today released images of the proposed buildings, and said the development will have a public plaza open to pedestrians between Tara Street and College Green with restaurants and shops.

A statement read “The public realm will be significantly enhanced through development of both schemes, providing a new public plaza in the centre of the block, opening up new pedestrian routes, opportunities for café/restaurant commercial activity at ground floor levels and an appealing vibrant working environment for the office occupiers".

The Office of Public Works says the project would be "cost effective in the long-term", as the new buildings will have more space for more staff, saving money on leasing other buildings.

It could take up to a year for planning permission to be approved.
