People who work in Dublin city centre and have the perk of a free parking space should have to pay a tax on it.

The suggestion has come from a business group, which believes the move could cut city traffic and improve air quality.

DublinTown believes a €1500 a year fee would put workers off driving into the city centre.

The group says congestion, air quality and reducing emissions are the reasons it wants to introduce the charge.

Parking Space Tax Proposal

Richard Guiney, CEO of DublinTown, said the money would be put aside for improving public transport.

"Bus shelters, real time information and also segregating cycle lanes", are some of his suggested investments.

Mr. Guiney also said the tax would be paid for by employers, but admitted "they can refer that charge to the employee".

Former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Brendan Carr, doesn't agree with the idea.

"Now we're being asked to pay an extra €1500 a year just for the privilege of going to work".

"Workers are struggling enough as it is at the moment", he said.
