Michaela McCollum was sentenced to six years and 8 months for attempting to take 11 kilos of cocaine worth 1.8 million euro out of Peru.
She pleaded guilty alongside her co-accused Melissa Reid from Scotland.
It's understood the request will be dealt with as quickly as possible but the process is still expected to take a number of months.
Its unclear what prison she will be sent to or the specific conditions of her transfer.
