There's not enough Gardaí to police Dublin's streets according to the head of the city council.

Dublin city's most senior official, Richard Shakespeare, has warned the capital can't be policed on overtime.

He says the force is under resourced and more gardaí are needed to combat far-right elements and thuggery.

The CEO of Dublin city council was acting chief executive when the riots broke out last November. He says that he was immensely proud of council staff who cleared rubbish and cleaned up after garda cars, buses and a luas tram were set on fire.

Mr Shakespeare told the Irish Times that "ne'er-do-wells" have become emboldened since the pandemic and that DCC is developing a city co-ordination office with reps from the gardaí, the HSE, businesses and communities.
