A company controlled by the head of Newcastle United has bought Boyers on North Earl Street. The iconic store shut in January after 110 years in business. It followed the shock closure of Clerys, just across the street, last June. It's emerged British billionaire Mike Ashley, who founded Sports Direct and owns Newcastle United, has spent €12.5 million on purchasing the building.

Sports Direct is believed to have beaten Aldi and Lidl in the bid to take over the former home of Boyers. Mike Ashley started the business in the 80s. He's since taken over Newcastle United in a bid to turn its fortunes around. However it's just been relegated from the Premier League. D'oh!

Sports Direct is subject to some controversy in the UK at the moment. Politicians are looking to interview Mike Ashley about how the company treats staff, including the use of zero hour contracts.
