Contracts have been signed for 750 new rail carriages - the largest and most sustainable fleet in Irish public transport history.

The first 95 electrically-powered carriages will be delivered in 2024, as part of the DART plus network for the Greater Dublin Area.

They'll have extra space on-board and e-bike charging.

Jim Meade, Iarnród Éireann’s Chief Executive, says it's part of a 1 billion euro investment:

"It allows us put services on ahead of the electrification programme. The Dart Plus Programme electrifies to Drogheda and out to Maynooth and down to Hazelhatch. When these trains deliver we'll be able to put them in service ahead of that programme, while we're still on the electrification journey, because of the battery element of them."
