Londoners were left jaws-dropped as a giant Superman sculpture appeared hovering over 300 metres above ground, perched atop the iconic Shard – marking the UK’s highest-ever public artwork.

The colossal—11 ft tall and weighing 120 kg—figure was sculpted in lifelike detail after actor David Corenswet (the new Superman) was 3D scanned during production. Made of eco-resin and fibreglass, it's secured with steel cables and framework right in the Shard’s spire.

Commissioned to promote the upcoming Superman movie (released 11 July), this striking display invites Londoners to “Look Up”—and the stunt certainly did, with the figure visible for a day and even spotted from up to 40 miles away. It’s the first time a cinematic character has graced The Shard, creating a gigantic buzz.

Directed by James Gunn, the statue was a true labour of love: over 4 months and 2,000 hours of work by a 20-person team. Gunn described it as “mind-blowing” to see his Superman sentinel over London. With this incredible stunt, the city got a sneak peek of what’s next in DC’s cinematic universe—quite literally sky-high.
