A new campus for St. Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush has been approved by the Department of Education.

It will be built on 13 acres of land next to St Maur’s GAA Club, 2.4 kilometres from the school’s present location at Convent Lane in the centre of the town.

It is anticipated that the new campus, that will also be home to Gaelscoil Ros Eo, will be completed in time for the 2023/24 academic year.

848 students are currently enrolled at the school on a 3.5 acre site, that was originally designed in 1961 to cater for 375 pupils.

Facilities

The new school will house a thousand students, with the potential to increase capacity by a third. The new facilities include;

  • 4-classroom Special Education Suite
  • 6 science labs
  • 6 specialist rooms including Music/Multimedia; Home Economics; Design and Communication Graphics; Technology; and Art
  • Dining area and catering facility
  • School Library
  • 6 ball courts
  • Full sized grass pitch
  • Multi-Use Hall/Changing Rooms
  • PE Hall and Fitness Suite

Patricia Hayden, Principal of St. Joseph’s Secondary School said;

"We are delighted that the Department of Education has completed the site acquisition and has now informed us that we can proceed with our plans for the development of the new school. This is a great moment for the whole community in Rush"
