More body parts have been found at a recycling plant in the west of the city.

Garda technical teams are still investigating at Thornton Recycling in Ballyfermot after a leg was found by a worker there.

Searches have been ongoing today following the discovery just after 11 o'clock last night.

There were thoughts that the limb could have been part of medical waste but it’s emerged that more body parts, believed to be an arm and a pelvis, have been found.

Local People Before Profit Councillor Brid Smith is shocked at the discovery:

"It's important to find out how this happened, very important to find out how this happened."

Another theory is that a homeless person may have been sleeping in a bin at the time it was collected.

There’ve been a number of near misses and deaths in the past year and Councillor Smith says companies and businesses need to check their bins before they’re collected.

"We do need some kind of an examination or policing of what's happening with recycling bins. We had a few incidents of near misses and sometimes deaths of homeless people sleeping in them."

The plant has been closed while Dr. Michael Curtis from the State Pathologists office and Gardai from the Technical team carry out their investigations.

An ambulance carrying the remains left the facility just before 2 this afternoon.
