A new app is being created which will let public transport users buy mobile tickets.

A number of Bus Eireann routes will trial the system later this year.

It will effectively allow passengers to buy a ticket within the app, and show it to the driver on their phone screen.

It is being developed by the company behind the mobile app for London's Oyster system.

Cubic also worked on replacing the Metrocard in New York in 2017, and the Opal Card in Sydney in 2012.

The new app is part of a long-term plan to overhaul the way passengers pay to use buses, trains and trams.

Anne Graham, Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority said:

"It is just the first of many changes in ticketing that we believe will enhance the provision of public transport across Ireland."

Tim Gaston, Director of Public Transport Services, said Cubic is "familiar with the dynamics of public transport in Ireland".

The company already manages Irish Rail's ticket machines.
