Fine Gael TD Maria Bailey has been demoted by the Taoiseach following a court action she took after falling off an indoor swing at Sophie's rooftop bar.

Leo Varadkar says the Dun Laoghaire Deputy made numerous errors of judgement in her handling of the case, even after she dropped it.

He has removed her as Chairperson of the Oireachtas Housing Committee, which comes with a salary of €9,500.

The Taoiseach said while the accident and injuries were real and it was not a fraudulent claim, Deputy Bailey was advised "there were concerns that a finding of contributory negligence against her was likely".

He said Deputy Bailey's approach to her injuries jarred "with that of a Government taking action to reduce personal injury payments".

Reacting to this evening's statement from the Taoiseach, Maria Bailey said she accepted his decision.

She said she recognised and regreted "the difficulties this issue caused for the Taoiseach and my colleagues during the recent elections".

"I want to express sincere thanks to members of my family, friends and colleagues who have been personally supportive of me during this recent period".
