A 40 year old man has appeared in court, charged with the murder of Jamie Kavanagh, at a south Dublin hostel earlier this week.

Robert Murphy, who was living at the address where the alleged incident took place, has been remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison.

24 year old Jamie Kavanagh suffered a serious assault in the early hours of yesterday morning and died from his injuries a short time later.

The attack took place in a hostel at 21 Harrington Street in Dublin 8, where both Mr Kavanagh and Robert Murphy lived, in separate accommodation.

At 3pm today, 40 year old Mr Murphy was charged with murder at Kevin Street Garda Station and made no reply to the charge.

He appeared before Dublin District Court this evening, where he was granted legal aid and certain medical care while in custody.

Judge John Hughes remanded Robert Murphy to Cloverhill Prison and he will appear near next Wednesday, via video link.
