A man has admitted killing a former captain of St. Mary’s rugby club, but denies his murder.
Cathal Sweeney died after suffering head injuries at a flat in south Dublin following one of Ireland’s Six Nations games in February 2014.
On February 8th 2014, Cathal Sweeney watched Ireland beat Wales in the Six Nations at a flat at Ashdale Gardens in Terenure.
Just before 6 o’clock that evening, the 62-year-old was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries and he lost his fight for life a short time later.
Gary Walsh of Ravensdale, Kimmage appeared in court two days later charged with his murder.
This morning, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, but this wasn’t accepted by the DPP and a jury of eight men and four women was sworn in to hear his murder trial.
The first witnesses are due to be called later this afternoon and the trial is expected to take at least six days.
