The jury is due to go out today in the trial of a man accused of starting a fire in which a 12 year old boy died.

54 year old Dermot Griffin of Ballyfermot Road in Dublin denies the manslaughter of Stephen Hughes at Rossfield Avenue, Tallaght in September 2001.

Stephen Hughes was 12 years old when he died in the fire in the den where he had been sleeping with his friend thirteen years ago.

The main prosecution evidence against Dermot Griffin is from three witnesses who testified that he was at the scene.

Under cross examination they all admitted they were using heroin at the time and had given statements to gardai in 2001 which conflicted with their evidence to the jury.

Dermot Griffin's former partner Tracey Deegan came forward in 2012 and said he had told her on the night that he was going to burn the hut down and that she had lied at the time to cover for him.

She's been described as a 'self avowed liar'.

Judge Patricia Ryan is to charge the jury this morning before they start their deliberations.
