The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering his neighbour’s dad in Skerries will begin their deliberations this afternoon.

31 year old Dragos Nica from Mourne Park admits stabbing 55 year old Michael Gannon but denies murder by reason of insanity.

Mr. Gannon was babysitting his daughter’s children when he opened the door to Dragos Nica who stabbed him once in the chest.

Judge Tony Hunt said it was an appalling case where someone was there one moment and then gone the next.

But he said the jury had to put aside their sympathies and deal with the evidence.

The court has previously heard the accused had been shouting and roaring that it was the poison that made him do it.

In closing speeches, Dragos Nica’s barrister said he believed the case only pointed in one direction – that the accused suffers from schizophrenia and was psychotic at the time of the stabbing.
