Joan Rivers had died at the age of 81.
The comedian was hospitalised last week after she stopped breathing during an operation on her vocal chords at a local clinic.
She had been placed in a medically-induced coma.
The comedian was best known by the latest generation for fronting E! show Fashion Police.
Joan most recently caused controversy when she claimed that Palestinans killed by Israelis in Gaza "deserve to be dead", adding "they started it".
She often took verbal swipes at celebrities, including herself, and was open about her extensive cosmetic surgery work.
In a statement tonight, Joan's daughter, Melissa said: "My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh".
She said "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
