The BBC has confirmed it will not be renewing Jeremy Clarkson's contract.

The Top Gear presenter had been suspended amid claims he punched a producer in a row over hot food.

An investigation's heard Oisin Tymon, an Irish member of staff, was subjected to a 20-minute verbal assault, followed by a 30-second physical one.

He was attacked after telling Clarkson the hotel they were staying in after filming had stopped serving hot food.

During the tirade Mr. Tymon was called "a lazy Irish c**t".

The BBC's Director-General, Tony Hall, said "It is with great regret that I have told Jeremy Clarkson today that the BBC will not be renewing his contract.

"A member of staff - who is a completely innocent party - took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed. There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another", he added.

Radio presenter Chris Evans has dismissed reports he's to become Top Gear's new host.

The Future of Top Gear

Tony Hall said "The BBC must now look to renew Top Gear for 2016. This will be a big challenge and there is no point in pretending otherwise."

Names including Chris Evans, Steve Coogan and Jodie Kidd have been tipped as possible replacement hosts.

It's not yet know if Clarkson's co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May will stay with the programme.

Sky and Channel 4 have both said they have no plans to work with Clarkson, while Netflix has declined to comment on future projects.
