Pickets are in place at Institutes of Technology across the city.

It’s part of a one day action by lecturers in a row over cutbacks and staffing levels.

Pat Donnelly is a lecturer in computing at IT Tallaght, he says they have serious concerns for the sector.

“If we don’t do something now, there’s going to be more rationalisation and significant impact on the quality of teaching and the quality of education our students are going to get going forward”.

Martin Marjoram also teaches at the College – he says the strike is about protecting their students and the communities they’re based in.

“We do need to protect the services we are offering to communities like this here in Tallaght and across the country. We are absolutely determined to see an improvement and for the new Government to change direction and to actually answer these concerns”.

Over 4000 lecturers are on the picket line across the country as part of this action over cutbacks, pay and conditions.

John MacGabhann is general secretary of the Teachers Union of Ireland.

“We are saying that unless Government properly funds and properly staffs these Institutes, there is going to be a huge loss in terms of national capacity”.

Lecturers say they’ll plan further strike action until all their concerns are addressed.
