Gardai have launched an investigation after threats were made online against Tánaiste Simon Harris' family over the weekend.

He's condemned the threats as ‘cowardice,’ and says targeting children is despicable and has no place in a civilised society.

The National Cyber Crime Bureau, the Special Detective Unit, and local Gardai in Wicklow are involved in the investigation.

Security analyst Declan Power, outlines the course the investigation should take.

"They will probably determine the origin of the threat. Then it would be about putting together a case to bring before the courts.

"That will need to follow certain protocols and conventions and that's where a lot of the police work will come in.

"Not through gathering intelligence but being able to turn it into evidence that can be put before the court."

Our Political Correspondent Sean Defoe says authorities should be able to track down the person behind the threat.

"Unless you have a very sophisticated way of hiding your footprint, Gardai are very good at finding these accounts.

"They have become more so now as we've seen different cases of say defamation online from anonymous accounts.

"This is something they deal with relatively regularly and unless this person is a tech whizz, they will be able to track them down."
