The family of a Dublin teenager who has been in prison in Egypt for 777 days say they're "hopeful" he will be allowed to return home soon.

Ibrahim Halawa was arrested at a political protest while on holiday in Cairo in August 2012; it's feared he's facing the death penalty as part of a mass trial which has been repeatedly delayed.

The 19-year-old from Firhouse has taken part in a hunger strike during his time in prison, and his family have raised concern about the conditions he is being held in.

The case is due to be heard this Sunday. That will be the ninth time it's been up for mention in court.

A march in support of Ibrahim was held on O'Connell Street this afternoon.

Ibrahim's sister, Somaia, said she feels different about this weekend's scheduled hearing "after the chairman has visited I feel that something is going to happen and he [Ibrahim] feels confident this time too".

"I hope it just doesn't go away", she added.

Last week Deputy Pat Breen told a Foreign Affairs committee that he would like a team to visit the 19-year-old and sit in during his court appearance.
