Facebook is planning to hire 1,000 new workers in Ireland this year, the company has confirmed.

The social network announced the jobs as it continues planning its move from the current Facebook offices in Grand Canal Dock to a new campus in Ballsbridge.

New jobs will be created across areas such as engineering, safety, legal, policy, marketing and sales teams.

The jobs announcement was made by the company's COO Sheryl Sandberg, who is in Dublin today and attending Facebook's 'Gather' event in Croke Park.

Facebook is also set to triple its investment in online safety programmes - run by the National Anti-Bullying Centre and SpunOut.ie - to €1 million.

With the company now set to grow its workforce here to around 5,000 people, Gareth Lambe - head of Facebook Ireland - acknowledged the company is concerned about the housing crisis in Dublin.

However, he suggested he's confident in the Government's efforts to tackle the problem.

He also observed: "One thing from our point of view that we hope is going to help us in that regard is our move to the campus in Ballsbridge - that gets us out of the Grand Canal Dock, city centre area where a lot of our employees were living.

"With access to the DART station there, we're hoping they'll really widen the net of the areas they go to live."
