A member of Laois County Council says Electric Picnic should not take place next month.

The organiser of the event, Festival Republic, says the festival will go ahead this September with reports that only vaccinated people will be able to attend.

Festival republic, who also run the Reading, Leeds and Latitude festivals in the UK, wrote to the Taoiseach last week with proposals of how it could take place.

It's expected 70,000 people will attend Electric Picnic in September, with 90 percent of tickets sold to date.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Paschal McEvoy says it can't be allowed to go ahead:

"I think it's absolutely atrocious. It's eight weeks out now and we still haven't great numbers going to gigs of any shape or form at the moment.

"To go from nothing to up to 70,000 in eight weeks is definitely not doable, its not fair, it's not healthy, it's not good for public health. It's definitely not good for the people in Stradbally and the surrounding areas."

The festival had been due to take place on September 3rd-5th, although in June the dates were moved to the 24th-26th instead.
