More people used the Luas last year than ever before.

There were 54 million passenger journeys on the tram line, up from 48.2 million in 2023.

Meanwhile Dublin Bus recorded 159 million journeys last year, an almost 9 per cent yearly increase.

In total, 340 million journeys were made on public transport last year, almost 33 million more than in 2023.

The figures from the National Transport Authority show this is the second consecutive year to break records for public transport use. The numbers are now exceeding pre-2019 and pandemic levels.

In the case of Iarnród Éireann, numbers increased by 10 per cent.

It comes as a brand new train station for Dublin will be officially opened this Sunday.

Woodbrook, located between Bray and Shankill, is the 147th station on the network. Passengers will be able to get to Dublin city centre in 40 minutes.
