As the schools return today, January 6th is the traditional date for people to take down their Christmas decorations.

Most people use a fake Christmas tree which they can wrap up and put away in the attic but for some, the smell of real pine enhances their festive season.

However, they now have to deal with falling pine needles and how to get rid of the trees – without breaking the bank.

All four Dublin local authorities will take your tree for free at various locations across the city and county.

Sandra Smith is from Dublin City Council, she says they’ve been running their successful programme for the last 10 years:

“ Last year, 160 tonnes of Christmas trees were collected by Dublin City Council and sent for recycling.”

“People who have bought Christmas trees will need to dispose of them or recycle them in some way. So by bringing them to one of our centres, it’s the easiest and most environmentally friendly option and there’s no additional charge to the householder”.
