Dublin fire fighters will protest outside Dublin City Council's monthly meeting later over what they say are chronic staff shortages.

SIPTU, which has organised the demonstation, says fire trucks are either being taken off the road or are under-manned on a daily basis.

The union is calling for more fire fighters to be trained and added to stations.

SIPTU's Brendan O'Brien says at the current rate of recruitment the DFB will still be short staff next year;

"There's an ongoing manning shortage in the brigade at the moment and of course the consequence of that means that our fire fighters and indeed the public are placed at higher risk, unnecessary risk because of that" he said.

Brendan O'Brien says more than a thousand fire fighters should be on the books but he says the figure currently stands at around 930.
