Killester in north Dublin has the longest wait time for a driving test in the country.

Learner drivers are facing waiting times of up to seven months or 31 weeks to sit their tests. That compares to Kilrush in Co Clare that has the shortest backlog at just three weeks

19 centres nationwide have waiting lists of over 12 weeks according to figures released by the Road Safety Authority under the Freedom of Information Act.

They show nearly 46,500 people are waiting to sit their driving test.

Nearly 33,000 have received no test appointment at all, while almost 14,000 have appointments scheduled for the coming weeks.

The wait time in Deansgrange/Dun Laoghaire is 18 weeks, while it's 14 in Tallaght.

Dublin driving instructor Ian Daly from automaticlessons.ie says there should be extended hours to clear the backlog. He says people are travelling to more rural areas to secure an earlier test;

"I've had pupils who will travel because they want to get a quicker test. I mean I know a couple that went to Castlebar, people will go to Mullingar, people will look at the pass rate and go to Donegal if they could."
