Dublin's bike rental scheme is to get more expensive from next month.

The annual membership for Dublinbikes is to jump by 40 per cent from €25 to €35 a year on September 3rd.

However the charge per trip will not be increasing. 94 per cent of journeys are free as they are less than half an hour long according to Dublin city council.

Officials have also told city councillors that the fee for most members will still be less than 68 cent a week.

There were plans to expand the bike rental scheme into more suburbs but funding issues prevented that from happening.

Colm Ryder, chairperson of cyclist.ie, says the increase came out of the blue and wasn't explained;

"Any increase is not something that anybody looks forward to, especially in these days. These kind of strange Covid days, days when people are losing jobs, when people are out of work so it's not a great idea whatsoever."

He says it will push more people to use alternative rental schemes such as Bleeperbikes.
