An internal investigation has been ordered after Dublin City Council allowed environmental protestors to stay camped out at Merrion Square.

According to the Irish Times, the head of DCC was unhappy that a decision was made by local parks management to leave more than 20 tents in place last week.

A protocol is expected to be put in place so that any similar issues that arise in the future are handled differently.

Extinction Rebellion, who was behind last week's action at the park, has since left.

Independent councillor Mannix Flynn says it has set a dangerous precedent;

"The bottom line is it looked like as if Dublin City Council was siding with the protestors. So what's going to happen now is if someone actually makes a request to stay in Merrion Square park while they protest, we could be taken to court and a case could be fought and we could lose it."
