4-thousand lecturers at the country's Institutes of Technology will go on strike today.

They're walking off the job in a row over cutbacks and staffing levels.

They claim since 2008 the number of students has increased by nearly 22-thousand, while the number of lecturing positions has decreased by 550.

The lecturers are being represented by teachers' union the TUI who says they've 'exhausted every reasonable avenue' before embarking on today's strike.

It's President Gerry Quinn says they have the support of the students.

''We have been working very closely with the Union of Students of Ireland who recognise that the problems that we are seeking to address affect lecturers and researches but also ultimately affect students.''
