A Clondalkin man has gone on trial accused of severing a prison officer's wrist with a meal tray.

45-year-old Ceraldo Eyken of Chaplin Court, Clondalkin denies the assault at Cloverhill Prison in April 2009.

Officer Gareth Sheeran needed 19 stitches and plastic surgery the following day.

The alleged attack took place just before tea-time in the prison, as inmates made their way to the serving area carrying empty trays.

The trial continues tomorrow before Judge Sarah Berkeley.
