Claims Dublin City Centre Is Filthy During Good Weather

A Dublin City Councillor claims the city centre is filthy and is being made worse because of the good weather.

The Grand Canal around Portobello was covered in pizza boxes, cans and bottles last weekend.

The Council says six extra litter bins will be placed in the area and more staff will be assigned on Friday evening.

Cllr Mannix Flynn says it's not enough.

''The reality is that the streets of Dublin are filthy dirty. They are manky. They have been for months.

There are stains all over the footpath, there is dirt everywhere and the seagulls are running amuck. And the streets are being used as lavatories by drinkers.''

In a statement Dublin City Council said the good weather is having an impact.

''Waste Management Services are aware that as we enter into the summer months, visitor and tourist numbers are increasing, which adds extra pressure and challenges to the delivery of the waste management service. Steps have been taken to allocate extra resources to areas of high footfall in the city centre commercial district, to combat and manage the extra litter that is been generated during this time. Further, we are continually monitoring the effectiveness of our service, and should we need to assign extra resources to target a specific area we will do so, in order to maintain a clean and litter free city.''
