An average of almost 130 motorists are caught out by clampers in the city centre everyday.

New figures show that it's a southside phenomenon with Dublin 2, 4 and 6 the worst affected areas.

Ranelagh has emerged as a new clamping danger zone with 320 in the first half of this year.

That compares to only 35 over the same period last year.

The Worst Clamping Spot In Town

The AA's Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan says Mespil Road remains the worst spot in the city.

He  said "I think it's one of those locations that if there are matches on at the stadium, people get caught out; a lot of people use the hotel along the road there, so it just seems to be a hotspot."

416 people were clamped along Mespil Road since the start of the year.

Despite a high-profile campaign by a number of cycling groups to highlight the extent of illegal parking on cycle lanes, 125 vehicles were clamped for parking on a cycle lane.

The figure is up on 49 for the same period in 2018.

The latest figures indicate a reduction in illegal parking rates.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council said it believed the downward trend was linked to "greater education and compliance".

Last year, the council made €3.2m in clamp release fees.
