Patients in need of urgent brain surgery are being turned away from Beaumount Hospital, due to a lack of beds.

Last Friday, the national neurosurgical centre had no beds for nine patients with malignant brain tumours.

Head of the unit, Doctor Mohsen Javadpour, has told The Irish Times patients’ health are deteriorating while waiting for treatment at home.

The latest figures show over 6-thousand patients were waiting on trolleys in hospitals around the country last month, while today 16 people are on trolleys at Beaumont.

Liam Doran, General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, has reacted to the delays:

However, The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s latest survey of Trolley/Ward Watch figures, for the month of August, confirms there has been a 41% reduction in Dublin hospitals.

Speaking on the reduction, INMO General Secretary, Liam Doran said “The reduction in Dublin hospitals is welcome and must be maintained into the future.  However, the significant deterioration, in a number of hospitals outside of Dublin is totally unacceptable and should be viewed as critical by the Department of Health/HSE.”
