A man has died after he was shot several times in Balbriggan.

The attack happened on Clonard Street after 39 year old Benny Whitehouse dropped his child off at the local school at around 9 o'clock Thursday morning.

The gunman fired several shots as they made their way back to the car and his target collapsed on the footpath.

A local resident gave him CPR but he died shortly afterwards.

His partner was shot in the leg during the attack and she's being treated in Beaumont hospital.

Locals described seeing the shooter driving away at speed.

There were some distressing scenes when the victim's brother arrived and demanded to see the body.

Gardai suspect Mr Whitehouse's death has something to do with an ongoing feud in the area.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
