More than 100 people have been arrested in Ireland as part of the largest Europe-wide clampdown on organised crime.

Supported by Europol, Gardai teamed up with law enforcement agencies from 33 other countries.

Yesterday marked the final day of this eight day blitz across Europe which resulted in the arrests of over 1,000 suspects

106 of those were arrested in Ireland for offences such as burglary, theft and possession of offensive weapons.

Europol described OPERATION ARCHIMEDES as the single largest coordinated assault on organised crime in Europe.

Countries outside the EU like Australia, Columbia and the USA also took part in the operation which saw the seizure of 600 kilos of cocaine, 200 kilos of heroin and over a tonne of cannabis.

30 trafficked children were rescued over the eight days.

That's being welcomed by the Immigrant Council of Ireland who believe it shows the need for robust laws in Ireland and across Europe to tackle sex-trafficking networks
