Austria is celebrating a massive Eurovision win after 24-year-old JJ stole the show in Basel with his haunting ballad Wasted Love.
The Vienna-born countertenor wowed both juries and public voters, securing Austria’s first victory in the contest since Conchita Wurst lifted the trophy in 2014.
So who is JJ? Born Johannes Pietsch, this rising star isn’t your average pop singer. He’s a classically trained opera performer, with a voice that reaches jaw-dropping soprano heights. He’s spent time at the prestigious Music and Arts University of Vienna and has graced the stage of the Vienna State Opera – not bad for someone now topping the Eurovision scoreboard.

Wasted Love, the track that brought Austria the win, was co-written by JJ alongside Teodora “Teya” Špirić (you might remember her from Eurovision 2023) and Thomas Thurner. The song blends old-school emotional balladry with modern techno beats and tells the story of someone drowning in heartbreak while their love slips away. Dramatic? Absolutely. But it hit all the right notes with voters across Europe.
JJ’s performance was stripped back and powerful – just him, some moody ocean visuals, and vocals that filled the arena. With his operatic background and Filipino-Austrian roots, JJ brought something totally fresh to Eurovision, and the fans couldn’t get enough.
