Most City Councils Say They Won't Close Off Access This Weekend

Most city councils say they have no plans to fence off areas ahead of the bank holiday weekend.

Proposals are being drawn up after large crowds gathered in parts of the country last weekend.

City councils across the country are trying to work out how to stop a repeat of the scenes on South William Street in Dublin last Saturday.

We've all been told to socialise outdoors this summer - but local authorities want to ensure it's done safely.

The Port of Cork is planning to fence off parts of the city centre quays this bank holiday weekend to stop large crowds gathering.

But Lord Mayor of Cork, Joe Kavanagh, says the council wants to welcome people into the city.

Galway City Council is also installing extra bins and public toilets - and despite Middle Arch being closed off, it says there have been no requests from Gardai to fence off more areas.

Waterford City Council is stepping up its cleaning operation too - but is confident large crowds in popular spots like Tramore can be managed.

Limerick City Council is meeting with Gardai and the HSE today - and will have more bins in place, but isn't considering cordoning off busy streets.

Dublin City Council says it's continuing to engage with stakeholders - and an announcement on whatever extra measures might be needed will be made in the coming days.
