McDonald's will launch its first fully vegan meal in the New Year.

Its "Veggie Dippers" contain a mixture of red pepper, rice, sundried tomato pesto and split peas.

The fast food chain is reacting to demand after criticism for some of its animal welfare standards.

Last year, it launched a wrap with veggie red pepper and pesto goujons.

However, they weren’t sold as vegan because they weren’t prepared in a way that prevented cross-contamination with dairy products.

The new veggie dippers, free from all dairy, will be available from January 2nd.

Thomas O’Neill, Head of Food Marketing at McDonald’s UK & Ireland, said: the company has "seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options" in the last year.

He admitted "its is time... to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers".

The new vegan meal options are:

  • NEW Veggie Dippers meal – Four red pepper and pesto dippers with light and crispy breadcrumbs
  • NEW Veggie Dippers Happy Meal® – Two red pepper and pesto dippers with light and crispy breadcrumbs
  • Alternatively, the four Veggie Dippers can be purchased separately.
