The Government’s new mandatory quarantine legislation has been described as farcical.

The new system is now online with the Health Minister believing it’s the most comprehensive in the EU.

33 countries are on this mandatory quarantine list including Brazil, Austria, the United Arab Emirates and South Africa.

It means people arriving from these countries will have to pay almost €2,000 to stay for 12 nights in hotel quarantine.

Gardai will be called if someone tries to leave while passengers will be allowed out for air if they have a negative PCR test.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly believes it’s the most comprehensive quarantine system in all of the EU.

Britain isn’t on the quarantine list despite it’s highly transmissible variant and the Health Minister says that’s because the strain is already dominant here.

But naturally it also leads to concerns that people from the 33 countries may just travel via Heathrow to Ireland if they want to avoid quarantining.

Labour Leader Alan Kelly believes this makes the legislation farcical.

The quarantine system is now online and comes into effect on Friday.
