Dublin City Council is moving to repossess an old city centre market which has sat idle for more than twenty years.

Councillors say a private developer who bought the Iveagh Markets can't prove he has the money need to restore them.

Martin Keane had said he would revamp the Francis Street building, with a food hall, distillery and stalls.

However, following years of delays, Dublin City Council says it's now repossessing the property and is willing to defend itself in court.

The site, which has sat unused since the 1990s, has rapidly deteriorated.

A condition survey has estimated the cost of stabilisation works would be in the region of €13m.

Dublin City Council says it is now taking the necessary steps to repossess the property.

It says it will defend its action in the courts if necessary.
