The Green Party will select its candidate this evening for the upcoming Dáil by-election.

A number of candidates have been announced in the last few days in the race to replace former Minister Eoghan Murphy.

The selection convention for the Green Party in Dublin Bay South will reveal its result this evening.

The two candidates battling are local Councillor Claire Byrne and Dublin's Lord Mayor Hazel Chu.

The winner will enter a crowded field.

This week Sinn Féin announced Senator Lynn Boylan would be contesting the by-election for them.

While the Social Democrats confirmed Sarah Durcan as their candidate.

Labour Senator Ivana Bacik is another big name contesting - while Fine Gael Cllr James Geoghegan runs with expectations of retaining the seat for the party.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Deirdre Conroy will be managed by local TD and leadership hopeful Jim O'Callaghan.

While there's a number of well known local activists in the field - including Cllr Mannix Flynn and Independent Peter Dooley, and People Before Profit's Brigid Purcell.

Housing is setting up as the major issue of the by-election, which will almost certainly be viewed as a referendum on the government's performance to date.
