A getaway driver in a gangland murder in Dublin has been jailed.

Christopher Moran, of Rowlagh Park in Clondalkin, was jailed for four-and-a-half years for impeding the apprehension of Wayne Whelan's killer.

Just months before he was killed, Wayne Whelan was shot eleven times in what was just one of a number of attempts on the well-known drug dealer’s life.

His recovery was just as miraculous as his survival but on November 18th 2019, his friend lured him to his death on the pretence of going to watch a soccer match.

Someone sitting in the back of the car that picked him up shot him three times. The car was then set on fire with his body still inside.

Christopher Moran was due to stand trial for murder but after admitting he was the getaway driver that evening, his plea to a lesser charge was accepted by the DPP.

At a previous sentence hearing, Mr Whelan’s sister described the time since his death as “hell on earth” for their family.

The fact that the gunman has so far evaded justice was one of the many aggravating factors taken into consideration when the judge decided on a 4.5 year prison sentence for Moran.
