Gardai and the DSPCA have launched an investigation after the body of a dog was found dumped in a bin shed beside some apartments in Clondalkin.

Officers say the dog, a large tan male un-neutered bull terrier type, was found decapitated.

The animals' remains were removed to the DSPCA Shelter in Rathfarnham and were examined by a veterinary team, who found a microchip which they say will help the investigation.

A cause of death has not yet been identified but the DSPCA says the animal had been dead for no more than two days.

A spokesperson for the DSPCA has described the incident as disgraceful and disturbing, and gardai are asking anyone with information to contact Clondalkin Garda Station.

A Garda spokesperson says: "Gardaí are investigating a suspected incident of animal cruelty following the discovery of a dead dog on Coolveen Green, Clondalkin. No arrests have been made, investigations are ongoing."

The DSPCA says: "Yesterday afternoon, the DSPCA received a call from a member of the public alerting us to the body of a dog that had been dumped in a bin shed beside some apartments in South Dublin.

"The dog, a large tan male un-neutered bull terrier type was found decapitated.  The animals remains were removed to the DSPCA Shelter in Rathfarnham and were examined by DSPCA Veterinary team.

"The DSPCA, together with the Gardai at Clondalkin have launched a full investigation after this gruesome discovery.

"Upon examination, a microchip was found and this will assist the investigation.  A cause of death has not yet been identified but we believe the animal had been dead for no more than 2 days.

"The DSPCA are calling on the assistance of the public to give us any details or information that may assist us in our enquiries.

"We know that the animal was not killed or decapitated at the place it was found and there is evidence that it was brought there in a vehicle and dragged a short distance to where it was dumped.

"We really need to find out what happened to this poor animal.  It is a disgraceful way to treat any animal and the fact that its head is missing is even more disturbing."
