Legendary Brazil forward Pele has played down concerns over his health and well being.

The 79-year-old has spoken for the first time since it was claimed he was reluctant to leave his house.

His son Edinho said the three-time World Cup winner was "embarrassed" because of health and mobility problems.

Pele had prostate surgery in 2015 and was taken to hospital with a urinary infection last year.

Pele said in a statement: "Thanks for your prayers and your worry. I am doing fine. I will be 80 this year.

"I have good days and bad days, which is normal for people my age."

"I'm not afraid, I'm determined and I'm confident in what I do. Last week, I had the honour of meeting the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) president in the studio I was shooting my documentary (about his footballing life).

"I have several upcoming events scheduled. I do not avoid meeting commitments from my always busy schedule.

"I continue to accept my physical limitations in the best possible way, but I intend to keep the ball rolling. God bless you all."

Pele scored 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 91 appearances for Brazil and is considered one of the greatest footballers of all time.
